Searching Cases by Name
Nebraska's free public option by party name is the JUSTICE One-Time Court Case Search. It matches parties, not witnesses. Type the name as it appears in court records. A last name alone works when that is all you have. Go broad first. If results hit the 30-record cap, narrow things down by Thomas County, a case year, court type, case type, judge, or attorney. One more step matters: check the terms box before the search will run.
- Open the JUSTICE One-Time Court Case Search and read the terms.
- Enter a party name, choosing Individual or Entity when appropriate.
- Run the broad search first and do not use a witness name.
- If the return exceeds 30 records, select Thomas County and add only known filters.
- Open the matching detail and compare the court, caption, filing date, and case type.
| JUSTICE field | Type | Required | Thomas County case search use |

| Judge or Attorney | Dynamic selectors | No | Useful additional filters for a common name. |
| Sort, Order, Client Memo | Controls and text | No | The memo is returned on the search invoice. |
Thomas County JUSTICE Case Search Controls
The official JUSTICE search preview shows the field set before a paid search. Case year, subtype, judge, attorney, sort, order, and client memo are optional controls. Their live choices are generated by the service, so a Thomas County searcher should not assume a label or dropdown value that is not displayed. A newly entered matter can lag the public system by up to 24 hours.
The official preview below is useful for recognizing the party, county, court, and filter controls before spending on a Thomas County case search.
Filters sharpen a case lookup, but a no-result answer is never proof that a case does not exist.
Searching by Case Number
With a case number in hand, try the subscriber case-number search, the terminal at the Thomas County courthouse, or simply the right clerk. Nebraska training material breaks down the sample D93 CI-14-0000019: D means District Court, 93 is the county number, CI marks a civil case, 14 gives the filing year, and the trailing digits show the sequence. County Court numbers swap in a C for the D. The county number for Thomas County does not appear in the local material, so never build an ID from the sample.
Thomas County Case Number Codes
These type abbreviations are statewide JUSTICE shorthand. They are not a Thomas County-specific code list. A number points you toward the right court and record category, yet the case detail itself remains the dependable source for subtype and status.
- CI
- Civil case type.
- CR
- Criminal case type.
- TR
- Traffic case type.
- PR
- Probate case type.
- C and D
- County Court and District Court identifiers in the training format.
Traffic tickets, misdemeanors, small claims, probate, juvenile, and preliminary-hearing cases in Thomas County belong to County Court Clerk Brenda Cochran, reachable at 308-645-2266. Felonies, civil matters, and District Court cases go to District Clerk Lorissa Hartman at 308-645-2261.
What a Case Search Returns
Found a match? Read the summary before trusting any single entry. JUSTICE can display the court and county, case number, caption or parties, type and subtype, filing date, judge, status, financial information, and the register of actions in order. That register logs filings, service, hearings, orders, judgments, and payments. Remember, a calendar setting is not the full register.
| Case number | The electronically generated identifier, including the displayed court and type information. |
|---|---|
| Case summary | Court, county, filing date, caption or parties, subtype, judge, and current status. |
| Register of actions | Dated filings, service activity, settings, orders, judgments, payment events, and other recorded action. |
| Financial record | Costs, fees, fines, restitution, assessed or paid amounts, and disbursements where applicable. |
| Images | Links to available nonconfidential documents, not a guarantee that every entry has an image. |
Thomas County Case Search Record Fields
Work from the case summary outward on a Thomas County case detail. Check the court, case number, type or subtype, filing date, judge, caption, and current status first. Next, set the party listing beside the chronological register. The detail may add offense information, civil filings, attorney entries, financial items, and linked documents, depending on the matter. Do not confuse two different tools. The trial docket is an ordered trial-call list. The register of actions is the dated record of everything filed or decided.
For any Thomas County hearing, save the case number, caption, date, time, location, and court or judge label the calendar gives you. Then confirm with the case detail or the clerk. Look for prior resets, the current register entry, and any controlling order. A calendar finds a setting, but it does not replace the chronological case record.
Thomas County Case Images and Subscriber Details
The Nebraska.gov subscriber service has free general list searches and charges $2 to open a case detail, including available images without an added image fee. The annual account fee is $100. JUSTICE says images may be available for nonconfidential documents filed or uploaded after April 16, 2008. An older or paper-only Thomas County case can have a register event without an online image.
The official subscriber service page shows the case-search and account choices used for repeated Thomas County case searches.
When a record must be court-certified, ask the clerk directly instead of relying on an image link.
Statewide vs County Case Search
Thomas County itself publishes no county-built docket portal. Online access runs through the statewide JUSTICE tools. The courthouse and clerks are the local fallback. A $17 one-time name search returns up to 30 records and stays available for three days, result or no result. The free Multi-Court Case Calendar finds a current or future setting by date or last name. It is not a case-detail search.
| Route | Coverage and cost | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| JUSTICE One-Time Search | Statewide party-name search; $17 per search; up to 30 records. | One public name search with detail available for three days. |
| Nebraska.gov Subscriber | Free list search; $2 case detail; $100 annual account. | Known case number, repeated searching, or available images. |
| Thomas County terminal and clerk | Free terminal at 503 Main St, Thedford; clerk assistance and copy requests. | A fee-free local lookup, older file, or authoritative copy. The Thomas County Court profile confirms the local court contact. |
| Multi-Court Case Calendar | Free current and future settings search. | Confirming a hearing date before checking the register. |
Thomas County Case Search Fees and Time Window
Cost and wait times hinge on how you search. The kind of case does not matter. Thomas County charges a one-time search fee even if nothing matches. Matches stay viewable for three calendar days. A brand-new filing can take up to 24 hours before it shows up anywhere. For a free party-name or case-number lookup, use the courthouse terminal during counter access.
Choose the route before paying: a known Thomas County case number can be checked through the subscriber service, terminal, or clerk. For an uncertain name, correct spelling and the proper party role may solve a no-result return before a second paid search is needed.
Thomas County eFiling Is Not a Case Search
Nebraska Judicial Branch eFiling is the filing path that feeds the JUSTICE trial-court system. It provides eFiling, eService, and eNotice functions for registered users. It is not the public Thomas County case search route, and opening an eFiling account does not replace a clerk’s authority over a court record.
The Judicial Branch eFiling explanation distinguishes the filing service from the public Thomas County case search tools.
A filing becomes a public record, but visibility still depends on access rules. System entry timing matters too.
Access and Restricted Cases
Two Nebraska court rules govern what a Thomas County docket search can reach electronically. Court Rule §1-805 opens the door to public access. It covers party indexes, case summaries, registers, calendars, and judgment or order summaries. Rule §2-215 also lets the public inspect records electronically at a clerk’s terminal. Even so, plenty of Thomas County files stay closed.
Juvenile, adoption, sealed, protected, and criminal-history-restricted information may be withheld or redacted. A blank result has other explanations too. It could be a fresh entry, a paper file that predates conversion, a mismatched filter, or a different party spelling. Ask the clerk which it is. An online absence is never proof that a case never existed.
Thomas County Case Search When No Result Appears
Start by running the search again with the exact spelling used in the court record. Drop any unneeded middle initial. Check the filters next. The wrong court type, year, or county will hide a case fast. For something recent, remember the stated 24-hour lag before panicking. The Thomas County courthouse terminal and the clerk remain the fallback. Either one can tell you whether an older paper file or an access restriction explains the missing Thomas County case search result.
Thomas County Federal Case Dockets Are Separate
JUSTICE covers Nebraska County and District Court cases only. Federal filings live elsewhere, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Nebraska’s CM/ECF system, under its own case-number format. A Thomas County case search will not return a federal docket just because a party lives in the county. The District of Nebraska CM/ECF information page describes that separate docket environment and its North Platte information.
That federal system sits apart and adds nothing to the Thomas County JUSTICE record.
